Hashing basically involves a group of like minded people getting together and having fun. It's often described as 'a drinking club with a running problem' but that doesn't really help if you've never been to one.

Basically one member of the group (The Hare) will set a trail (in Abu Dhabi we use chalk marks) along footpaths through the city. The rest of us (the Pack) then have the challenge of following the trail.

You do not need to be super fit to hash. We have regular hashers in their seventies!

The Hare usually sets a trail that takes the Pack about 45 minutes to 1 hour to follow. There is a running trail, and for the less fit, a walking trail.

After the run, we congregate for the social aspect of hashing, this revolves around what we call 'The Circle'. There is usually beer involved at this point for those so minded. The Circle is under the control of a master of ceremonies (the GM or Grand Master). The Circle is usually funny, bawdy and definitely not politically correct.

Amongst other things in The Circle we will welcome visitors, virgins (first time Hashers), Hashers visiting from other groups around the world, returning Hash members etc. The circle will also include a large element of ad-libbed piss taking and so appeals to those who enjoy the spontaneous. This lasts about an 1 hour to 90 minutes.

Most important, running shoes. You will be running / walking mostly on footpaths and some sandy off-road trails. Also bring a towel and a change of shirt as it can get very sweaty.

You will need AED 50 and above all, a sense of humour.

It is recommended to take a bottle of drinking water out on the run/walk with you. This will be provided at the start and is included in the fee.

Things to leave at home: New trainers and political correctness.

Each hash is held at a different location in Abu Dhabi each week. Sometimes it will be in the city and on other occasions it will be off island. The location of the next run is here.

Our weekly hash is every Monday evening. It's generally a 6.30pm start so aim to get there about 6:15pm. For details of the next run click here.

We charge AED 50 for all participants whether regular members, visiting hashers, or virgins (first time hashers). That allows you to take part in the run/walk and join in to our circle. This covers the cost of food and beers. Children and dogs are free.

Each week a different type of food delivered to our Circle location to replace the calories burnt during the run / walk. These range from Indian, Lebanese and Arabic dishes, shawarmas, KFC and pizzas. There is usually a vegetarian option also. Soft drinks as well as beer and cider are also available.

Most of our run locations are within a 30 minutes car journey from any point within the Abu Dhabi area. Google map coordinates are provided prior to the event by email and WhatsApp. If you don't drive it is likely that there will be someone attending from near your location who can assist with transport. For shorter distances, taxi's are cheap and regular.

The run / walk is usually over by 8pm. The Circle lasts approximately another 90 minutes which includes time to eat, drink and socialise. The evening has usually concluded by 9.30pm.

We run regardless of the weather. We NEVER cancel hash runs. Often the runs during the summer are shorter in distance and duration than those held during the cooler winter months.

Occasionally some members bring their children. Be warned though that there will be strong language and any new words they learn are at your own risk and for you alone to explain! We do not modify our language in The Circle for children.

The run / walk can be good opportunity to exercise for your dog. As per the UAE laws, dogs must be kept under control and always on a lead.
